Customers who walk into the Rainbow Angel Cafe in Beijing will be kindly reminded by hand-painted cartoon signs scattered at the entrance: “Our pastry chefs are hearing-impaired. Please communicate patiently.”

A speech-to-text software has been installed on a tablet at the front desk to facilitate communication. Customers can even flip through a small booklet provided in the store, which teaches basic sign language, and then extend a thumb and bend it twice to express gratitude to the server.

This “silent” cafe located in Changping district is run by five hearing-impaired bakers who come from different places of the country, where people leisurely sip a coffee at a quiet corner or taste dozens of snacks of Taiwan flavor made by them.

Founded by Lee Shao-hwa, from Taiwan’s Kaohsiung, the cafe offers free training for young people with hearing challenge in making Taiwan snacks to help them acquire skills that are often hard to gain.

Lee’s journey in the mainland began in 2011 when her family moved to Beijing from Taipei due to her husband’s job transfer. After arriving in Beijing, Lee, who used to work in finance industry, became a full-time mother in order to take care of her daughters.

In 2016, occasionally, she took her daughters to serve as volunteers at a nearby rehabilitation center for hearing-impaired children to finish a primary school assignment. The girls became good friends with those hearing-impaired children.

Since then, they went to the rehabilitation center to accompany the children once or twice a week. After a year or so, it prompted Lee to think about how to help those older children to find a way to integrate into the society.

In 2017, Lee and her friends launched the Rainbow Angel Cafe to teach the children to make cookies and snacks from Taiwan for free. Over the past six years, they have trained 50 or 60 hearing-impaired youths.

Currently, the cafe has five core staffs. The shop manager, Zhao Leilei, from Qingyang, Gansu province, joined the cafe in 2017. He is in charge of making pastries and coffee, receiving customers, as well as the operation of the shop.

Zou Yan, from Beijing, who joined the cafe in 2021, is the only female in the team. Now the leader of the baking group, she is in charge of training new employees and developing new pastries. The other three team members are mainly working as bakers, who have been trained recently to make coffee and serve customers.

Many of her friends in Taiwan buy the snacks to show support, Lee said, adding that “My friends and relatives in Taiwan have never come to the mainland. Their impression of the mainland largely comes from the media and our cafe shop.”

Initially, the cafe’s sponsors mainly came from Taiwan, including Taiwan-funded companies on mainland and Taiwan people living on mainland. Now, more mainland enterprises have joined in to support them and that surpassed those from Taiwan.

“That gives us great encouragement,” she said. “I find that our understanding of charity has become more and more similar. I think only this way could our cafe shop take root here and continue to prosper.”

Over the past six years, Lee’s cafe has struggled to break even. It was the cafe’s sixth move in Beijing. With yellow wooden exterior and floor-to-ceiling windows, the cafe’s decoration expense for the new shop were donated by people from both sides of the Strait.

Every weekend, volunteers from both the mainland and Taiwan gather to help the bakers pack snacks, carry ingredients and even hold concerts with singing in sign languages.

Lee said: “Filled with coffee and baking aromas, the place makes me feel at home in Beijing. As small as our cafe is, it is a place full of love.”
