AI is a revolution to change life like the web did, says Gates

Artificial intelligence will radically change people’s lives as much as computers, the internet and mobile phones have, Bill Gates has said

The Microsoft co-founder believes AI will revolutionise the world of work, learning, travel, healthcare, and communication.

Writing in his blog, Gates described how he was stunned last year by the technology created by OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT. He challenged the company to train an artificial intelligence to pass an advanced biology exam

“I thought [that] would keep them busy for two or three years. They finished it in a few months,” Gates said. “I watched in awe as they asked GPT 60 multiple-choice questions from the AP Bio exam — and it got 59 of them right.

“Once it had aced the test, we asked it ‘What do you say to a father with a sick child?’ It wrote a thoughtful answer that was probably better than most of us in the room would have given. I knew I had just seen the most important advance in technology since the graphical user interface [the early version of a computer operating system].”

Gates, 67, is still a shareholder in Microsoft and advises its boss but he stepped down from the board in 2020. The company has become a leading investor in OpenAI. Gates predicts that companies will have AI in every meeting to give its insights.

However, Gates cautioned that the fruits of AI would not be evenly distributed to the poorest and governments and philanthropy would have to correct this. “Market forces won’t naturally

produce AI products and services that help the poorest,” he said. “The opposite is more likely.”

He said that in poor countries, where the vast majority of childhood deaths occur and many never see a doctor, AI would give people the ability to do basic triage. Medical advances and drug development would accelerate dramatically, he added, because AI would be able to process the huge data in biology

Promises that computers would change education, producing a meaningful effect on students’ achievements had not come to pass, Gates said. Nonetheless, he added: “AI-driven software will finally deliver on the promise of revolutionising the way people teach and learn.”

He acknowledged that as “with any technology that’s so disruptive [it] is bound to make people uneasy. It raise shard questions about [employment], the legal system, privacy, bias, and more”.
