Belgian athlete Vanja Cnops claimed an impressive victory on 26 September at the Fuga Glacier Extreme Gongga 100, a trail running race held in Garzê, Sichuan Province, China!

In trail running, athletes compete on unpaved mountain trails, making the sport both a physically and mentally demanding challenge. Set in the shadow of the more than 7,000-metre-high Mount Gongga, the 40 km course took runners to elevations exceeding 3,000 metres. Vanja emerged as the fastest among more than 1,300 participants, completing the demanding route, which featured over 2,700 metres of elevation gain, in just over six hours.

Vanja, who initially competed in track races and marathons, started trail running in 2018. As she lives in Singapore and practices the sport on an amateur basis, she mainly takes part in races across Southeast Asia, including in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. “I kept seeing more and more videos of races in China on social media. They looked so spectacular that in June I decided to take part in a Chinese race for the first time.” Vanja achieved an impressive fourth-place finish at the Yading Skyrace, which was also held in Garzê. During her second race on Chinese soil in September, she went one better and took home the top prize!

Vanja is highly positive about the organisation of Chinese races. “Not only do these events attract more participants than most races in other countries, but the welcome is also incredibly impressive, with highlights such as a light show. Although the races take place in relatively remote areas, the accommodation and overall facilities are excellent as well!”In November, she will return to China to compete in the Four Sisters Mountain Ultra Trail, a prestigious race held in Aba, also in Sichuan Province.

Vanja, congratulations on your outstanding victory, and we wish you the very best of luck in your upcoming races!
