Before coming to China, the media coverage on China I had come across was usually negative. Many people in my country including me mistakenly believed that China was a poor country, where there was only oppression without freedom. But when I came to China, I found China is AMAZING! I dare say China is better than the West in many ways. Modernization, convenience, hospitality, safety, all of these has left a positive impression on me. So I told my families and friends that it was only after I came to China I deeply appreciated how excellent China has developed.

I know that some Western media, yes, the bbc and CNN, have deliberately created the illusion that China is a horrible country by drawing up stories, hiring actors, and even adding gloomy and creepy filters to the pictures of China. I couldn’t believe that so much material our media shot in this wonderful country has been used for ulterior motives.

Living in China is safe. For example, I don’t need to be afraid of go home alone late cause there are no gunmen bursting into the street and shooting at people or robbers with knives - none of that happens.

Living in China is convenient, I dare you couldn’t imagine how convenient it is! I used to need to bring my wallet with me because I needed cash and credit cards in case PayPal was not available. But in China, I can totally get rid of them since I can pay with my smartphone even at the corner shops. Here I have to mention an app, WeChat, a social media used in China.

But what makes me call it an amazing creation is not its function of sharing life and chatting, but the fact that you can use it to do almost everything in life, from making medical appointments, booking tickets, paying for shopping, and even ordering food in restaurants. As long as I have my phone with me, I don't have to worry about anything for I can do everything on my phone, including buying tickets for bus or underground.

I am also amazed by the infrastructure in China. When I lived in London and Paris, I hated taking the tube. The possibility of unexpected delays of more than half an hour would mess up my schedule and cause me many troubles. But in China, especially in big cities, public transportation is very convenient, with short intervals and rarely late. Moreover, many underground stations have platforms built with cultural characteristics and have become social-media-worthy locations, where many people go to take pictures.

I wouldn’t be surprised if people from other countries fall in love with the life in China after they came for a visit. China is growing fast and well. I hope that everyone who is prejudiced against China can come here to see for themselves and experience the real China. China definitely worth a visit!

If you’re a traveler that likes exotic lands and cultures different from your own, there is no place on Earth as “faraway” as China. Different smells, different language, different colors, different mindframe. If your idea of travel is relaxing in a resort eating club sandwiches, China may not be for you. For those adventurous and open-minded enough to give China a shot, chances are they return home with some great stories and a changed outlook on life.

I visited China a few times before settling here to study Chinese. I can add some information on why myself and my foreign friends here love China so much.

China is a country that gets better and better each day that you become familiar with the customs and way of life. If you’re planning on going to China, there are online resources you can download to familiarize yourself with China before you go.

Here are some positive things that I’ve learned from my time in China:

The “Shame factor” is more effective than aggressive law enforcement. In China all kinds of situations are set for high crime: rich and poor living next to each other, dark spaces near train and bus stations busy throughout the evening, crowded areas with people bumping into one another, pockets vulnerable. However, the crime rate is incredibly low. The shame of being caught for a crime carries repercussions for the entire family. Crime and rebellion are not glamorized in China. You may see police in the background, but rarely patrolling aggressively.

There is actually a lot of freedom in your daily life. In China, the energy at night isn’t capped by closing times. Bars venues and food stalls can stay open practically all night. Restaurants are filled 24/7 with people enjoying themselves. There are no laws prohibiting these kinds of activities. Foreigners can enjoy themselves without having to show ID to gain entrance, or being shoo’ed out of a closing venue at last call.

Convenience. In China, apps make ordering food, a ride, a bike, anything you might desire, quickly possible. The amazing public transportation can whisk you around a city or region in no time, with very little waiting. If you need a bottle of water or have a craving for some tasty duck neck, chances are you will walk past it on the next block. In America, you often need a car to get around and collect what you need and want. In China, with its densely-populated cities, it’s all at your fingertips.

Eating Should be a Communal Event, Not an Inpidual Event. In China, the food your order will likely be shared between everyone at the table. The menu is often on the wall, so you don’t waste time flipping through the pages quietly. Decisions are made together, food is shared and harmony ensues.

The other people at the table will ask what kind of flavors you enjoy, and make a compromise to make sure everyone is happy. At some street stalls, you’re even sat at a table with strangers, sharing a hot pot and passing sauces back and forth. The adventures of dining out are something that I greatly miss when I’m back in the USA.

These qualities of China and Chinese culture combine to make the country an incredible place to travel or live. Like every place, there are downsides to life in China. However, coming from the USA, there is so much to learn and experience that it can really change your life!

first visited China late last year for 1 month on my own . I was not sure what to expect, you hear lots of positive and negative views about the “modern” China.

I first visited Changsha for 5 days and I was blown away by the organisation for almost every event.

The security was amazing, the people were so friendly and the city itself was nothing like I expected, it was amazing.

There were “old” and “new” buildings side by side in some areas, the contrast was just so unexpected.

I stayed in a hotel that does not usually cater to “foreigners”, ( I’m British), but the staff were fantastic. I decided on a trip to an island on the river but had to use the Metro, the hotel staff pointed me in the direction of the nearest station. I was a little apprehensive at first, but all the signs and notice were written in Chinese and in English, so are the ticket machines.

Apart from lots of stares from the local people which made me smile, most had never seen a foreigner in real life before, I felt welcomed by everyone I spoke to, in shops, food outlets, street food sellers etc, albeit I used my translator on my phone to communicate but a lot could speak English. The food in China is like nothing else, I tried almost all the food that I would probably never eat if it was in the west. There were only 3 things that I didn’t enjoy due to texture and/or taste, but everything else was so tasty and beautifully prepared and served up. The cost of eating in China is a fraction of the cost in the UK.

My next stop was Guangzhou, a mere 800 or so kilometres away, well, I had heard about the “fast trains” and decided to give it a go. The hotel staff directed me to correct train station via the metro and I got there with ease.

The next hurdle was to procure my train ticket, I was the only “foreigner” in the queue and was a little bit concerned that they would not understand my requirements, I wasn’t even sure if they allowed foreigners on these trains, I don’t know why I thought that.

I got to the window and the lady could not speak English, but she actually swapped desks with a colleague who could, I couldn’t believe that they would go to this trouble but they are so committed to providing an excellent customer service, particularly to non Chinese.

The instructions and directions to the correct train were spot on and I found it without any problem. The train to Guangzhou was absolutely immaculate, they have people constantly up and down the aisles picking up any wayward rubbish etc.

I arrived in Guangzhou and was completely and utterly stunned by this city. The taxi trip from the train station to my hotel was so cheap, around 120rmb (around 15), this was for a 40km taxi ride, in the UK this would be around 40–50.

Again I checked into an Apartment in the Liede district and the staff were amazing, I got to my room and it smelled of cigarettes so I asked the porter if he could sort out a different room for me, he sorted this in around 10 minutes, fantastic service.

I could go on and on about this country but I suppose I should bring this post to a close.I have been back 3 more times since my first visit and find something new every time.

The overall impression that I have is that of a population on the up, super cities springing up that are so well thought out, our planners in the west could learn something from the Chinese.

The cleanliness of everything, street’s, restaurants, street food sellers, shopping malls where you can buy high end things but also buy Chinese products that are as good, if not better than anything you can buy in the west, I actually only came back home with 3 original t-shirts, I bought almost a whole new wardrobe, the cleaning lady at my hotel took my old clothes away to give to a charity in the city.

Maybe I should summarise now.

The people are so friendly, respectful and helpful. The sights are amazing, a short walk from almost any hotel or apartment brings you to something different almost every day.

I could go on and on about my visits to this amazing country, it has had an affect on me which I have never experienced whilst visiting other countries and I’ve visited a lot of different places.

My eventual answer to the original post is this, when this terrible virus sweeping through China is eventually brought under control, go visit, but with one stipulation, have an open mind and you will fall in love with this country.
