Two young Belgian wakeboarders achieved impressive results at the World Wakeboard Championships, which took place early November 2022 in Thailand.Lowa Vancutsembecame world champion, andLouis Eggerickxbrought home an impressive bronze medal.

This year the World Wakeboard Championships took place in Thailand. This water sport appeared in the early 1980s, on the back of the snowboarding trend.

It is based on a combination of techniques from the worlds of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing. Wakeboarders are connected by a rudder to a motorboat or an electrically driven cable that pulls them at speeds of 33-38 km/h, allowing them to glide through the water fast enough to perform a variety of acrobatic tricks with their board.

In Belgium, wakeboard is still a relatively niche sport, but it is popular with the younger population because of its high speed and intensity. Even though the sport has not achieved mainstream status yet in Belgium, Lakeside Paradise at the Belgium seaside is actually one of the top 10 places in the world to practice wakeboarding, and our wakeboarders often perform very well at international competitions.

At this year’s Championships in Thailand, six Belgians were present and two of them made it to the podium! Lowa Vancutsem, who’s only 14 years old, made her mark by winning the world champion title in her age category. Louis Eggerickx, the other Belgian medalist, ended third in the Junior Men category. At only 17 years old, he gave a great world standard performance.
