观看世界级田径盛会：范达姆纪念赛 Watching world-class athletics at the Memorial Van Damme

Every year at the end of summer, the world's best athletes gather at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels for the Memorial Van Damme.

Last weekend, athletics fans once again enjoyed world-class performances in several track and field events over two consecutive days.

This year was particularly special as it marked the 50th edition of this annual event.

Memorial Van Damme

The Memorial Van Damme is one of the meetings most appreciated by athletes, and many outstanding performances have been delivered in Brussels over the years. No fewer than 23 world records have been broken at the Memorial. Last weekend, athletes achieved the world's best performance of the year in several events, while no fewer than eight meeting records were set. A particular highlight was the victory of Botswana's Collen Kebinatshipi in the men's 400 metres, where he recorded the sixth-fastest time in history. Several Belgian athletes also performed exceptionally well, most notably Paulien Couckuyt, who improved her own national record in the 400 metres hurdles.

The Memorial Van Damme is named after Ivo Van Damme, one of the greatest middle-distance runners Belgium has ever produced. In 1976, he won silver medals in both the 800 metres and 1,500 metres at the Summer Olympics and became European indoor champion in the 800 metres that same year. Tragically, Ivo died in a car accident later that year at the age of only 22. In 1977, a group of journalists decided to organize an athletics meeting in his honour. Eight years later, the event was included in the series of the world's most prestigious international athletics meetings, a status the Memorial has maintained ever since. To mark its 50th edition, a statue of Ivo Van Damme was unveiled in front of the stadium in the presence of King Philippe, Queen Mathilde and Prince Gabriel.

In 2027, the Memorial Van Damme will take place on Friday, 20 August, and will represent the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Beijing one month later.
