On April 19, the Humanoid Robot Half Marathon officially kicked off in Beijing— marking the world’s first-ever half marathon featuring humanoid robots. Twenty robot teams from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Ningxia and other places competed alongside human running enthusiasts on a 21.0975-kilometer-long course.
The race route featured a variety of terrains, including flat ground and slopes with a maximum incline of 9°. While the course was relatively smooth for humans, every rise and dip posed a serious challenge to the robots' stability and power systems.
The performances of these humanoid “contestants” quickly went viral online, sparking lively discussions.

Right after the race began, a robot veered off course, zigzagging left and right and even charging toward a patch of greenery. Its handler had to intervene via remote control and even called out loud, urging it to stay on track.
Another robot was happily trotting along when it suddenly lost its sense of direction and headed straight for a barrier. Thankfully, the handler managed to grab it by the “neck” and pull it back just in time.
Midway through the race, one robot was sprinting at high speed when its head suddenly fell off due to a mechanical failure. Undeterred, the now-headless robot continued running toward the finish line, its mechanical legs still moving in perfect coordination as staff helped it back up.
One fan-favorite was a robot named “Little Giant,” which, despite being only 75 cm tall and weighing just around 10 kg, was already a crowd star. The robot was not even 100 days old at the time of the race. Though its steps were unsteady, it persistently moved forward — even greeting people along the way.
After intense competition, the “Tiangong” robot won first place, followed by the robot “Little Rascal”.
Besides awarding first, second, and third places, the organizing committee also presented several special awards, including Completion Award, Best Endurance, Most Popular, Best Gait, and Best Innovation in Form.
